Comments :    Aftershocks rock north queensland area but weather system will pass Updated A small earthquake measuring less than a kilometre in size has rattled the Australian bush, sending the ground shaking for several hours. Earthquakes can be as violent as magnitude 6 or 7 in Australia, but rarely do we get them this powerful. The quakes were first felt overnight on the north-east coast of southern Victoria. They have been reported across many parts of Australia, including Brisbane, where the epicentre of the quake was. However, a major tremor near the coast has been linked to an offshore oil drilling rig operated by oil company Petroclinc that's about 350 kilometres from Bowen Island. Perth's CBD, known as the "capital city of the south", was hit by the quakes after 1.5 kilometres of the CBD was shut down. Queensland has been a scene of many earthquakes since the early 1980s. On Thursday evening, the state's major tremor was accompanied by seismic activity in other parts of the state. At 11:30am, Perth saw an 8.6 magnitude earthquake, with the tremor causing street flooding and power outages. In the south-west, Melbourne also felt the quake, shaking trees and buildings. "The whole city is shaking, the whole city. It's a little bit like Christmas morning with the weather coming out and everything and then suddenly the sun goes down and it's a bit more dark and it makes it feel a little bit weird, we are having a bit of a tremor," one resident said. That would see the overnight deposit rate rise to 6.5pc, the bank's second successive annual rate rise in eight months. By contrast, banks typically target 5.75pc in a similar period. Some argue that with interest rates still very low – currently at 0.25pc – an abrupt rise in the interest rate could trigger inflationary pressures, leading to financial instability. Finance minister George Osborne, who earlier this month spoke of the "serious" risks of "uncertainty" about the UK economy's outlook, has repeatedly promised to deliver at least a "sharp" rate rise by the middle of next year. With unemployment unchanged last month at 5.3pc, the Bank's annual survey found that the UK's confidence rating of "high" is now the highest of any major economy in the world.
